Coffee And Heart Disease

Are coffee drinkers doomed to suffer from heart attacks and strokes later in life? It was thought so at first, especially since taking four to five cups of coffee can increase blood pressure by 5 points in some people. Coffee is also believed to increase homocysteine levels in the blood - a risk factor for heart attacks.

The latest research, though, shows otherwise and states that it is perfectly fine for coffee drinkers to keep consuming their favorite beverage. One study of 20,000 Finish men and women indicated that coffee consumption did not have a link to heart disease. In fact, those who consumed coffee over tea were actually more likely to benefit from a healthy heart.

One study, the Scottish Heart health study, looked at people who drank very large amounts of tea or coffee. Because it contains many antioxidants, it is commonly believed that tea is better for you than coffee. Because they are thought to prevent good cholesterol from turning bad and resulting in heart disease, antioxidants are thought to be good for you and even prevent cancer.

This study looked at 11,000 men and women between the ages of 40 and 59. They were randomly selected to participate in a seven-year study. They consumed up to 36 cups of tea and 21 cups of coffee daily.

But coffee proved to be the hero in the long run in the large-scale study conducted at the Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Coffee drinkers turned out to be healthier than tea lovers and had strong hearts. Researchers found that the more coffee consumed, the lower the incidence of heart disease or death. The opposite is true with tea.

Another study from the Harvard School of Public Health indicated that consuming up to six cups of coffee each day can reduce the likelihood of premature death from heart disease. For 24 years, a group of 41,736 men and 86,216 women were reviewed for their coffee consumption habits.

Research indicated that the risk of heart disease was reduced with increased coffee consumption.
