The most important thing about becoming a defender is to be physically strong and sure footed this is especially important when you're playing against a strong striker. The main job of a defender is to pry the ball away from the striker and get rid the ball from your own area, and thus their primary skill that is needed is tackling. A skilled defender can tackle and win the ball without giving away a foul to the opposition team.

You will never lose a game if you have a strong defense line; some defenders are also known to have the ability to score for their team, especially from corners where their physical strength and height can give them the advantage of heading the ball.

The primary skill set here is the ability to pick out your team mate with a good pass, and have the vision to do so.

For defensive midfielders, their main job is to protect their defense line, and try to win the ball before it even reaches their defenders. As such, the important thing about being a defensive midfielder is the ability to intercept and cut the opposition's play. They will be providing covers for their defenders, a good defensive midfielder can even pass as well as an attacking one, and as such they are also known for their passing abilities.
